Hradec Kralove is a small city, 100 km East of Prague with over 100,000 inhabitants (see map). It is a beautiful green city, with many parks and woodlands. It has a historical background as well as many of the well known shopping, entertainment and fast-food centres you would find in a typical city in Britain.

Since 1992, Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove has organised medicine and dentistry degree courses conducted entirely in the English Language. Curricula of Czech and English courses are entirely parallel and fully comparable with the current international standard.

Hradec Kralove

Teaching at the Faculty of Medicine at Hradec Kralove is arranged in 51 departments with a teaching staff of 247, including 29 professors and 59 associate professors, ensuring that the instructing will be complete and of a high standard.

Clinical instruction takes place at the Faculty Hospital, which has 1750 beds and 430 doctors. At present, there are about 900 Czech students studying on the Czech course and over 200 foreign students studying on the English Programme at the Medical Faculty.

The students on the English Programme are from Great Britain, United States, Canada, Sri Lanka, and Scandinavia. The Medical Faculty has a 50:50 male to female student ratio.

Common courses for General Medicine and Dentistry students in basic theoretical disciplines are organised in 4 semesters during the first 2 years of study. They include Biophysics, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology and Histology at the Theoretical Institute.

The Dentistry course includes dental propedeutics providing theoretical information on tooth care and practical skills based on the use of phantoms.

Hradec Kralove

This faculty of Charles University in particular has a newly revised course in Dentistry. Dental students are taught separately from medical students from very early on in the course. This provides greater depth and focus on dental procedures, with less focus on subjects that may be more relevant to a degree in Medicine. The Dental degree course at Hradec Kralove is also shorter and less expensive then at any other faculty of Charles University.

During the first 2 years of study, all foreign students are taught the Czech language to prepare them for communication with patients and nurses (who may not speak adequate English) during the clinical years of study.

The third and fourth years are devoted to pre-clinical disciplines such as Pathologic Anatomy, Pathophysiology, Microbiology and Pharmacology. The introduction to clinical subjects such as Neurology, Psychiatry, Dermatology and Radiology are also taught. Dentistry students begin their major subjects such as Therapeutical, Prosthetic and Surgical Dentistry, which continue until the final exams in the fifth year.
