Recognition
-
Students who have completed their primary medical qualification outside of the UK or EU will be required to sit the PLAB examination in order to gain GMC registration in the UK. We advise all students to make enquiries with the GMC to find out if their course will be recognised as a suitable primary medical qualification.
-
Graduates are usually required to pass all steps of the USMLE examination before they may obtain a licence to practice medicine in the US. Graduates from Caribbean medical schools are taught under USMLE guidelines, with the intention to gain a high USMLE pass mark. Therefore students interested in practising medicine in the USA are strongly advised to consider studying medicine at a Caribbean medical school.
-
You are advised to contact the GMC directly about this so that you can be sure it is the right course for you.
-
M&D have not had students experience problems in the past.
Entry Requirements
-
SMU is a graduate entry course, therefore students who already hold a relevant degree including the required science modules may apply directly to the four year course at SMU without studying the M&D Pre-Med programme, provided they meet SMU\’s pre-requisite requirements.
-
Students whose degree is not science-based will need to study the Pre-Med to ensure they are fully prepared to study medicine. In order to gain a place on the Pre-Med students are required to have at least 2 Science A-Levels or the equivalent (please contact M&D to discuss your individual requirements).
-
Although SMU is for students who already hold a degree, the university is willing to accept undergraduates once they have taken and passed the one-year M&D Pre-Med programme, as this will adequately prepare them for the demands of the course.
-
All students who apply are assessed on an individual basis, and not having the right A-Levels or grades may not necessarily be a barrier. If you do not have A-Levels in Biology or Chemistry we may send you on a summer course at Albion College or suggest you study the Pre-Med before starting medicine at SMU. Students are also assessed on the strength of their application, including grades, references, work experience and personal statement.
-
Yes, students who can prove they have already successfully completed and passed modules may be able to gain exemption provided they can supply verified copies of certificates and/or transcripts.
-
This is not possible as only students who have studied Medicine are eligible for exemption. Of course, having already achieved a degree in a relevant area of study will strengthen your application.
-
No, students are admitted on the basis of their application and academic background.
-
SMU usually conduct telephone interviews with candidates.
Financial Requirements
-
Fees are $8,900 per semester, and the course is ten semesters in total. The fees for the final five semesters, which are based in the UK or US, are $9,950 per semester.
-
Unfortunately scholarships and grants are not available and students must be able to source their own funding. International students may be able to secure funding from their home countries, and should look into this for themselves.
-
Every student pays the same fees regardless of nationality and country of residence.
-
The cost of living on Grand Cayman is approximately comparable to the cost of living in London. Students who submit their housing application before the specified deadline will be able to stay in university managed accommodation which is cheaper than renting privately.
-
The application fee is £150 (£200 for the Caribbean Universities) for your first choice, and should you wish to apply to more than one of M&D\’s partner universities this will cost the reduced rate of £100 per university thereafter.
Structure
-
No, students study the final two clinical years at hospitals in the UK or US.
-
The vast majority of students will go to the US or UK to study the clinical years, however if you wish to remain on Grand Cayman this may be possible subject to availability of places at the hospital.
-
SMU has a group of partner hospitals in the UK and students who choose to complete their clinical years in the UK will work within one of these hospitals. There is some flexibility around choosing which of the partner hospitals the student prefers and obviously UK nationals will receive priority in choosing which of the UK partner hospitals they prefer, although choices are not guaranteed.
-
Yes, it is part of the course that students spend the two clinical years in the UK (or the US if they prefer).
-
This is not possible as SMU arrange everything for you at one of their partner hospitals, and you will be asked for your preferences on where you are placed.
Accommodation
-
Yes, all students must spend the first semester at the Residence Hall, and then have the option to stay in university managed housing or find private accommodation. Prices start at $4,700 per semester for a single standard room, but standard and deluxe single and double rooms are also available. There will be a refundable room deposit of $1000.
-
After your compulsory first semester at the SMU Residence Hall, if you wish to find private accommodation the Office of Student Services will be able to offer you advice on where to find housing as well as lease arrangements etc.
Other
-
Medicine at SMU is an American-registered graduate-entry course, therefore the majority of students will have already completed a three or four year degree or a four year American pre-medical programme. The one year M&D Pre-Med enables undergraduates to study the medical programme at SMU therefore M&D applicants are often younger than their American fellow students.

Online Medical Admission forums are an excellent way to exchange views and ideas on what medical schools are looking for and which medical and which dental schools actually ask the toughest interview questions. The premed course is an excellent way to secure a place at a UK medical schools in the UK or medical schools based abroad. Medical and dental school applicants are strongly advised to get as much medical work experience and possible. Medical work experience seminars and dental work experience seminars consist of a series of medical seminars and dental seminars at a NHS hospital based in Britain. Many students also fine that UKCAT revision and UCAS Personal statement checking is very helpful.
Fierce competition for UK medical school places has encouraged students to embark on medical degrees and dental degrees outside of the UK, such as: Medical schools in Poland, Medical schools in Slovakia, Dental schools in Slovakia, Medical schools in Prague, Dental schools in Prague and Medical schools in the Caribbean.
