Introduction
-
The M&D Foundation is open to anyone interested in a career in Medicine or Dentistry, who does not have the academic qualifications required to enter the M&D Pre-Med directly. It is an entry-level course and can be tailored to suit each individual's needs.
-
Parts of the Foundation may be completed by students that wish to apply directly to St. Matthews University (Grand Cayman) but require additional modules to meet the pre-requisites, such as Psychology and Advanced English & Communication. Such students would not need to spend a whole year on the Foundation, and may even be able to complete the required modules in a summer course before starting at SMU.
-
On the M&D Foundation you will find a wide variety of nationalities as our students come from all over the world including the UK.
-
The Foundation is taught at Albion College, in central London. Albion is a private college with high academic standards.
Entry Requirements
-
There are no strict entry requirements as this is an entry-level course and candidates are considered on an individual basis. Usually students will be expected to have 5 GCSEs or the equivalent. Students are advised to contact M&D to discuss their requirements.
-
Students will be required to have at least IELTS 5.5 with the aim of raising this during the course of the programme.
-
No need to worry - the M&D Foundation can be combined with English language tuition and IELTS preparation classes.
Application Procedure
-
There is no offical deadline as we accept applications all year round and students may be able to start the course at various times of the year rather than wait for September.
-
There is a non-refundable applciation fee of £150.
-
The first step is to fill in an applciation form (this can be obtained from the website or by calling us). The student should fill in the application form and return it to us with the documents listed on the application form's checklist (ommitting anything will cause a delay to your application) and application fee. Then we will fully evaluate your application and decide whether to make an offer.
-
We do not conduct interviews routinely but it is possible that a tutor at Albion College may want to meet you informally to discuss your requirements.
-
No, students are admitted based on their application form. Therefore it is important to include a reference, details of any work experience, certificates, etc.
Financial Requirements
-
The total fees for the year are £11,000.
-
The fees are the same for everyone, both UK and international students.
-
Obviously the figure varies according to lifestyle and area of London, but the typical accommodation costs will be between £60-£120 per week (depending on what type of accommodation you choose, with shared flats outside of Zone 1 probably the cheapest option). With excellent public transport links students can live outside of Zone 1 and travel to college in minimal time.
-
No, materials such as textbooks, stationery etc. must be paid for separately.
-
As this is a private course, UK students will not be entitled to student finance, loans, grants or bursaries. Overseas students may be able to secure funding from their home country, and should make their own enquiries regarding this.
Routes into Medicine
-
The Foundation programme helps students to acquire the knowledge base and academic skills necessary to study Medicine at degree level. It provides an understanding of how the human body works through the study of physiology, genetics and molecular biology, cells and tissues, microbiology and chemistry.
-
As the course is flexible to suit each student's requirements, you may even be able to take A-Levels whilst you are there. Some students may be eligible to take accelerated A-Levels in one year but some will need to spend the usual two years.
-
All students who enrol on the Foundation will receive a conditional acceptance to move onto the M&D Pre-Med upon successful completion. The Pre-Med can then lead onto Medicine and Dentistry either in the UK or abroad. Students who successfully complete the M&D Foundation programme may be eligible to start a medical degree at MUG in Poland immediately, without taking the Pre-Med.
-
Yes, we have secured an agreement with MUG (Medical University of Gdansk) in Poland that students who have passed the Foundation will be eligible for direct entry into their six-year Medicine degree.
Other
-
Albion College will assist all students in finding accommodation, whether it be in shared flats, student halls or 'homestay' (where the student lives with a local family).
-
All students from outside the EU will require a student visa.
-
No. Usually Access to Medicine courses are for students who do not have Science backgrounds but have worked in a relevant field such as healthcare, nursing etc. Students on Access to Medicine courses are usually over 21, and if they do not secure a place at a medical school following the course, it leads to few other options.
Successful students of the Foundation can progress onto the Pre-Med, which opens doors to UK and overseas medical schools and second-year entry to three-year BSc. degree programmes.
