Located in the middle of the Great Forest, The University of Debrecen is a prestigious university in one of the largest cities in Hungary with a higher education history dating back to the 16th Century. Today the Medical and Health science Centre has over 6000 students and 330 highly skilled lecturers.
The first three years of the programme will be taught in English. For the last 3 years foreign students are required to learn Hungarian in order to be able to communicate with patients.
During the first two years the curriculum focuses on theoretical aspects of medicine. In the 3rd year, disciplines exploring the theoretical foundations of diseases, as well as the preliminaries of internal medicine and surgery are taught. In the 4th and 5th years training in pharmacology begins and the study of clinical subjects continues. During the 6th year students take their final examinations.
The Medical School is one of the largest and best equipped hospitals in the country with 18 clinical departments and more than 1800 beds. The Kenézy Gyula County Hospital is strongly affiliated with the Medical School, and plays an important role in teaching the practical aspects of medicine.
Courses at the Medical and Health Science Centre have been accredited by the World Health Organization, US Department of Education, The State Education Department (NY, USA), Medical Board of California , the General Medicine Council (UK - PLAB exam might be required), Medical Councils of Israel, Ireland, Iran and Norway. Around Debrecen
Debrecen and its surroundings are situated in the eastern part of Hungary in the area between the River Tisza and the border line towards Romania.
Debrecen has an excellent transport system including an international airport,electric railway, tram and a frequent coach service which connects the smaller villages and towns to the county centre. Budapest can be easily reached in two or two and a half hours’ time by car and in three hours’ time by train.
The main square in front of the Big Reformed Church is the city’s hub. There are fountains, blooming trees and many coffee terraces. The grand Coskonai Theatre and Déri Museum both play an important role in the flourishing cultural life characterising the city. Summer is the time of festivals; people come far and wide for the famous Debrecen Flower Carnival and the Debrecen Jazz Days. Those wishing to take a rest are welcome in the Big Forest where the famous Debrecen Spa Bath and the Mediterranean Aquaticum are located.
Application Procedure: Complete M&D Application; sit entrance examination which focuses on Chemistry, Biology and Physics; take an interview; receive offer.
Entrance Requirements: To have achieved at least grades B,B,B at A-Level standard or an equivalent with at least two subjects being science based. And to successfully complete the entrance examination and interview.
There is a 21-question multiple choice test from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. If the applicants would like to be accepted to the 1st year of the General Medicine or Dentistry, you have to achieve 8 points out of 21 at least. The test is only 30 mins long.
